September 2015

  • Our first unit of science introduces us to the field of ecology.  Students pair-read the Lorax and considered questions about the needs of the organisms living in the initial environment and how changes in their habitat affected them.  There was good discussion about the ideas Dr. Suess was trying to present in this book, why he chose the name Once-ler for a particular character, why we never saw the face of the Once-ler and other wonderful insights.   We also broke down the word Ecology: oikos (greek for house or home) and -ology (a subject of study; a branch of knowledge).  The study of our "house" will continue as we continue our study of ecology.

  • In our continuing study of ecology students discussed how one single change to an ecosystem can have a huge impact.  Classroom teachers read The Wolves are Back (Jean Craighead George) and the class contrasted it to ideas previously discussed after reading the The Lorax.  Later in the week, prompted by the lyrics of Joni Mitchell's song Big Yellow Taxi, visuals found in a 1970's commercial, and an introduction to the ideas of the Clean Air and Clean Water Act, students took roles of the Oncler (big business) or the Lorax (environmentalist) to create a different ending to the story of the Lorax.  Ask them about their discussion and solutions.  If you would like to view the links used (and others) check out the science WIKI page.
