Tools of Scientists:

Microscopes

Third grade classes begin the year with a study of some of the tools used by scientists; particularly of biologists who study living things.  The first tool we have been working with is the Stereomicroscope.  Students learn how to properly use the two different versions of stereomicroscopes found in Park's Lower School.

  • After an initial exploration of a U.S. penny to find: the date it was minted, a foreign language on the penny, and Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial, students move on to choosing their own samples, appropriate for viewing with these microscopes.
  • We discuss the need for scientists to accurately communicate their ideas and students learn about making a drawing of what they observe in their filed of view and how to indicate the proper magnification on their drawing.
  • After a couple of classes students become quite proficient with, and work independently on, these microscopes.
